1  Operation: Overkill BBS Door Game / Recruit Chat / Re: POLL: Shortest reasonable time limit? on: June 28, 2010, 03:45:16 am
30 to 45 minutes, but if it can be done, cut down on the time it takes to tele-port between bases. The animation(if you can call it that) takes forever, and I doubt the game needs all that time to handle the transition.

Hey, I'm not playing anywhere yet, but hopefully Tarix will be able to get a working compile of the Linux OOIS into my hands. I plan to start with a single player beta test, and if things work out I'll announce a multiplayer beta here on the forum. We'll see how many people we can wrangle up.

DM

I'm interested, are you going to be playing one door or more? I always liked the three doors on OOII's site. On another note, if you do get the code from Tarix, does that mean you change a few things in the game?

like the propeller. Is it a boat propeller? how the heck do you use that as a weapon

I always imagined it as an airplane propeller... y'know, the kind with two blades? and you would hold one end of it and use it like a club.... Not exactly my idea of an ideal weapon even then, but at least it would be plausible.

I subsequently realized that they do address this point in the game. When you run across Laufpizud (I think that's his name) in the AFB in the description it says his hand has been replaced by a spinning propeller, very inspector gadget. I hope like hell that if a player equips a propeller they don't have to use the same method, I think it would have a detrimental effect on long range combat there after Smiley .
4  Operation: Overkill BBS Door Game / Recruit Chat / Keeping Players on: September 20, 2006, 03:25:01 pm
Emailing players when a game re-starts is a good idea, if you look in the past messages there are alot of "glory days" players who've stopped by, participated and then left. There are two issues to this though. The first is player number. To this end there are a fair number of people playing in the novice door, but they seem to play for a while and then give up. On the other hand, the hard door could stand to be a little harder for the grizzled, veteran, and maybe just a smidge masochistic players. Speed up the action combat scroll, or take off some letters. What would be great is some real team on team competition. I feel like I've missed out on the old bbs vs bbs days. In the end it's up to us players to try and build up the community and make the games more of a multiplayer experience.

This article is based on my own (somewhat limited) experience with this subject.  If anyone has any suggestions or corrections, by all means, speak up. Also welcome would be defensive strategies and suggestions on how to PROTECT your base from attack.

The only way to actually take over official possesion of the base is to kill the owner while he is in at that base. As previously mentioned, he'll rush out to defend the base when the sheilds are breached, if you kill him the base becomes yours. If he's not there you can access the base, but ownership doesn't change and you can't get in the control room (this doesn't change ever if you reduce the structure of the base, I've had it down to 3% before and still couldn't get in that damn controll room). You can use the detox chamber, but it charges a fee like the complex does(not sure if the base owner gets the funds for this or not....)
6  Operation: Overkill BBS Door Game / Recruit Chat / Barl's Bar and the mystery of the code keys on: September 09, 2006, 07:58:20 am
<Inspiration for this post's title provided by countless scooby doo episodes>

Does anyone out there know the criteria for buying a code key from barl? In the faq it says you've got to pay 100,100 crystals for a drink. I've managed to buy one in a game a few months ago. but have failed at each subsiquent attempt. Does the ammount have to be exact? When I did manage to buy it, I actually paid more than the 100,100 just to be careful. Or does Barl only have one for sale, and when that's gone everyone else is SOL. Or maybe it's something else entirely :?:
7  Operation: Overkill BBS Door Game / Recruit Chat / Oracle hunting etiquette on: September 02, 2006, 09:33:50 am
In my humble opinion, this is the biggest point of contention among overkill players. How much is too much when hunting the oracle? Granted, there's a 200 stat point ceiling, but that can still add up to alot of visists to the big O. I've recently come to believe that hunting him all out is A-O.K. for two basic reasons 1) It would take forever (with the game at harder settings) to get the components to enter the AFB without the oracle. It's far more likely that players would drop out from lack of interest than keep plugging away to up their levels. 2) If your in a competitive game your putting yourself at a disadvantage by not increasing your stats as fast as possible. If another player, or team of players, decides to declare war, it's better to be in a position of strength. I'd also say that by taking that position of strength, you deter another player's unwanted attention (though you can also make the arguement that rapidly boosting your stat's just makes it more necessary for other players to knock you down a peg or two. Those are my thoughts on the matter, but I'd like to hear from my fellow overkillers on this.
8  Operation: Overkill BBS Door Game / Bugs and Annoyances / Teleporting on: August 15, 2006, 12:22:33 pm
This might seem like heresy to overkill purists, or it might be to ponderous a code change, but you should be able to teleport between multiple bases by entering the co-ordinates once. So if your in a level one base and want to get to a level 5 base (and you have bases in range, in between) you just type in the level five co-ordinates and your there. The 1,500 crystals per trip between bases can stay in effect, so a trip between five bases would be 6,000 crystals (five bases but you only teleport 4 times, for everyone who was about to tell me my math sucks Smiley ). It's a pain to type in the numbers constantly, and in the current days of item cloning it favors boring AFB play over cool level 5 killing and selling.
9  Operation: Overkill BBS Door Game / Bugs and Annoyances / Item Descriptions on: August 15, 2006, 12:04:25 pm
I've got one bug and one suggestion for the game. First, the bug is in the base supply room, when you put in the # to get an item description it tells you about the next item on the list (ask for #2 the salanger, and it'll tell you about #1 the steel chain). the very last item, the combat suit, won't even come up, even if you add one to the number (I can't remember it's exact effect from way back sadly). The next is a suggestion, In the AFB reaseach room we NEED describtions of the special items you can buy there ( and there must be the cool-ass pictures made out of characters).  Possibley the overkill fan base can submit text and picture ideas. I'll also suggest adding descriptions of items that can be sold, but not bought ( like the propeller. Is it a boat propeller? how the heck do you use that as a weapon, do you hold onto two of the blades and wack the guy over the head? I think after 15+ years we need to end the mystery    ) While I'm suggesting work for other people to do  Smiley the AFB could use some ansii graphics past the trap door to make it feel more base-ish.
10  Operation: Overkill BBS Door Game / Recruit Chat / board play on: July 30, 2006, 07:51:58 pm
I started playing recently too, on novice and journeyman. One of the teams playing has an interesting strategy, they kill next to nothing, but somehow get the money to add 170 stat points in one sitting. If they're doing it legit, more power to em', they're way above my abilities, but I've watched the daily stats, and they've had at most 8 kills for the hole team excluding the first day. It's not the oracle, it's not AFB cloning (that's still a recorded kill) The one weird thing each member does do is log in for less than a minute multiple times, I've seen as many a seven times right in a row. I sure could be wrong, but it seems like something stinks, it seems like they've foud a glitch that lets them clone items or cash endlessly. Anyway, to wind up my bitching Smiley , I've been putting in a ton of hours, but there's no point to it. there's no stopping a guy who makes just 36 kills, has only 48,000 experience points but somehow masses 306 stat points. It doesn't help that they ruthlessly hunt down other players and blow up every opponent base built. I'd play in the jouneyman game, but they're in there to, with a massively built up character (though at least that character's experience and kill levels justify the total stat level) the moment anyone gets close that character will add another 200 stat points overnight  and it'll be game over. I love Overkill, but I'm not going to waste my time playing when one team exploits a program glitch to crush everyone else. Maybe that's not what's going on, maybe they're playing a game beyond my comprehension....but I doubt it.
11  Operation: Overkill BBS Door Game / Recruit Chat / Game still up? on: July 16, 2006, 09:03:28 am
I just started playing overkill yesterday ( no, I did not kill or loot another recruit) but given the last message and teh fact I can't get on the BBS, is the game down for revisons?
