16  Operation: Overkill BBS Door Game / Recruit Chat / Re: Posturing on: January 15, 2009, 01:20:17 am
If I ever get set up in a permanent living address (I'm temporarily shacked up in Dallas trying to find employment), I might set up a BBS for some SERIOUSSERIOUSSERIOUS 'killing: medium difficulty maps, limited time limits, verified users, perhaps a preset squadron vs. squadron battle (as in the old Tournament days, except now we're worldwide, baby).  Ya dig?  Get your shovels.

You are more than welcome to physically take possession of Overkill World HQ anytime you want.  Furthermore you are more than welcome to electronically, or by any other means, change the settings to something more appropriate.  Grin

Yeah, they are offline, but not very far offline.  I'll see about getting those up tomorrow.

I hear the IRS monster carries a LOT of crystals.

But nearly impossible to kill.  Maybe we need some raids put into Overkill first.  Grin

I can take anything, but the crystals.   any Ideas?

The wastelands and base inventories were kept back-to-back in memory.  Unfortunately there is a bit of confusion in the code as to exactly where the Wastelands items stop and the Base items start.  This was fine in the DOS days because there was no memory protection, but now some of the old code crashes.

I'll probably broke it for water crystals or possibly just the water crystals you are trying to pick up!

It doesn't really pay to be nice in Overkill. Smiley

What can we do to fix this?

I think the only full solution is to find a host for it somewhere.  It's pretty smooth when I connect to it in the middle of the night so I guess you are probably just using it at the same time as the owners of the DSL line it's on.  Grin

I'll try to find some solutions soon since it seems like I'll have a lot of free time this summer.

Thoughts, Michael?

I think for reasons of nostalgia we should keep the door game "as-is".

Auto-reset was a must because of the current state of BBS gaming.  Most of the other changes have been bug fixes, spelling corrections, or code updates to reflect that fact that we have Pentiums and not 486s.

The rewrite is back alive and I'm doing a bunch of huge back-end changes to it.  We can discuss those elsewhere.  (Do you still use an IM services?)
24  Operation: Overkill BBS Door Game / Recruit Chat / Re: Time & Speed on: July 22, 2008, 01:07:19 pm
Good question.  The only way I can really tell is to jump in a game.  Did you change the calculations based on real clock time so the value is consistent across all machines?

Yes.  The Windows versions should be accurate to about 15ms on NT platforms.  (That's a limitation of NT ... still ...)  Actually I've heard of a hack to increase that accuracy so I'll look in to it.  I remember it being a problem for the WoW client.

The DOS version does a little speed test at startup so it can get strange in rare cases.  I want to try and change it to something better, but I need to dig up all of the references on hooking into to the low level DOS timers.  I think 1.3 will be the last DOS version ever.  It is such a pain. Smiley

Any thoughts about the time limits and combat speed these days?

It's back up.  If you ever have problems with it please send me a PM here.
27  Operation: Overkill BBS Door Game / Bugs and Annoyances / Re: booted after getting caught in a trignet on: July 17, 2008, 06:53:14 pm
The games aren't connected at all.  The machine is even dual CPU to make sure that isn't an issue. Smiley

There's probably just a crash bug in the trignet code.

(I just can't believe how many crash bugs there are in this game.  These are basically places where the DOS version was just happily overwriting memory ...)

From now on if you have problems with Overkill World HQ please send me a PM on this website.  That is the fastest way to contact me since it will email a copy of your message to the email address I check the most.

Thanks.  Cheesy

The software the website used to run was really buggy and fully of security holes.  Even better they charge you $12 a year to fix them.

So I'm switching software.  While this is happening we'll have the forums here to make sure the most important stuff is online.

I'm sorry about the theme.  If anyone is good with web colors please suggest changes to the style.css file.

BTW, if anyone out there in Overkill land is in the hosting business please let me know.  Things are looking pretty grim unfortunately.
