1  News / News / Operation: Overkill Update 2019! on: December 20, 2019, 03:25:45 pm
There are many reasons why I am shutting down these forums. At this point it is mainly about security and upgrading this software which was cutting-edge when we started in 2002 but now is not.

With that said, even in 2019, there is still a lot of interest in the BBS scene and preserving games has become so huge that we actually saw Blizzard re-release a 15-year-old game in response to fan requests.

As we all know a lot of things have changed over the years and within the past year there have actually been some pretty cool developments in the BBS space which I plan to take advantage of to give us all a place to play again.

In the meantime I've set up a Discord server for Operation: Overkill so that people can reconnect and discuss everything OO related old and new!

The code has been ported and run on everything that FPC supports. You don't really have to port a text based pascal game once the 32bit/64bit issues are fixed.  Grin

Overkill is compilable on every platform where a suitable pascal compiler is available. The current list is:
  • MS-DOS
  • Windows
  • Linux
  • macOS

Currently only the DOS version is stable enough to run because the original code has some out-of-bounds bugs that crash on 32bit systems but wrap-over on the DOS version. It takes a really big and long game to show off these bugs and there just hasn't been enough players playing consistently to narrow down all of the cases well enough to fix them.

Well, that's not cool -- someone overwrite the entry somehow... ?

One of the Wikipedia rules is that members involved with the project can't contribute to the page. Extremely annoying for stuff like this since the historical accuracy is the most important part.

What operating system are you running the BBS on?

If he needs any of the assets definitely have him get in touch.  The ANSI screens can be converted to png very easily and accurately.  The wave files also haven't been release raw, but we're not trying to keep any of that a secret and term support is always welcome.

I'm actually working on a similar project using straight HTML5 (JavaScript, Websockets, etc.) but I won't have much time for it until April.

The game server is still around but its hard to find any time to move it forward.  The game is actually much larger than I remembered and it was taking a long time to convert everything and make it "safe" for multiple players at once.  In the end I focused a bit on trying to make the old game more playable on modern servers, but even that is a bit daunting.

I'm currently working towards putting the original game back up where you can play using just a modern browser.  It's kind of funny that it took this long for browsers to catch up to what we had implicitly in the modem days.

The forum is accepting new members again.  The captcha is pretty complicated so I hope it keeps the bots out!

I had a lot of life changes, mainly moving to Japan and spending four years finally getting a degree, and my interest in Overkill waned a bit.

The interest is back and I'm currently trying to sort out what that means and how to deal with it all.

The first thing that needs to be done is I need to move this to a new host, spam protect it, and update it.

I guess part of the plan was to have me run it on the server that I'm already paying money for.  Grin

I'll make it so.

FYI -- New version of SMF is up...  1.1.8

I upgraded. Smiley

I'll check out those two mods.  Both look very nice.  Thanks!

I'm pretty sure we don't actually.  That sounds like fair use to me.

In any case if you want to use the art or look of the game to promote it then you have our permission. Smiley
